Appley Ever After/Apple Picking

You know the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Boy, do I live by that rule? Honestly, I can hardly go a day without eating an apple. It is always on my list of things to buy at the supermarket, farmers market, or wherever. So you can imagine how excited I was when some church members suggested we go apple picking with the children and how quickly I agreed. Besides, it had been years since I last went, and my two younger ones had never gone, so it was a perfect opportunity to go out in the fields to pick apples and spend time as a family.

A little selfie with the family. The sun was ablaze lol

Interestingly, we almost did not make it because Emmah-Rose had a fever the evening before the day. However, even though she had a bit of a cough and runny nose, the fever was gone, so we decided to go. So last Sunday, we loaded up our car and headed upstate New York to Hurd’s Family Farm for our first apple picking adventure as a family of five. My six-year-old son was so excited, and I was happy that we did not disappoint him by not going. When we arrived on the farm, there were already many people, and the weather was perfect. Mr. Sun was sunning indeed! When we entered, the staff directed us to where we should park. We then purchased our bags and headed to the field to pick apples. Wait, is it field or grove? I got myself a medium-sized one because I wanted to share it with my neighbors. The sizes and prices were as follows:

  • The small bags holds about 7lbs or 14 average size apples – $15
  • The medium bag holds about 11lbs or 22 average sized apples – $25
  • The Large bags holds 23lbs or 46 average size apples – $50

There were so many varieties that making a selection was complex. Gala, Honeycrisp, Cortland, Snapdragon, Granny Smith, Rome, Ginger Gold, Golden Delicious, Crimson Crisp, and Idared were there, to name a few. We decided to taste and then select what we liked best. We ate apples until our stomach was full before settling on Snapdragon, Cortland, Granny Smith, and Ginger Gold because they were most delicious to us.

Emmah-Rose: the Ginger Gold apples were perfect for her to eat because the were really soft /mushy.

After we finished apple picking, we allowed the kids to play around for a while and then headed home. I am already thinking about returning soon, plus I want to get some pink lady apples because they are my husband’s favorite. According to the website, they will be available at the end of October.

So the above picture is what we brought home and I cannot wait to try a few apple recipes. I may even dehydrate a few to keep them for longer. I will definitely be doing a follow-up post on what we made.

As always, here are a few scripture verses to add to your beautiful day. Matthew 7:17-20, “Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.” So whatever you do, ensure that your are bearing good fruits.

Until then, God speed.
