Spring Tingz: Trimming and Replanting Strawberries

It’s springtime, and my mood is absolutely fantastic! I’ve got yet another reason to rise early in the morning and kick-start my day – gardening. With the weather turning friendlier by the day, I’ve started clearing up my deck garden in anticipation of the planting season. Every year, I reorganize my deck, aiming to maximize the variety of crops I grow and the yield I get. Sadly, some containers had to be disposed of due to rot or crystallization, causing them to break apart. This year, I’ve also decided to delve into more vertical planting to make the most of my space.

My first task? Tending to my beloved strawberry plants, which have thrived and multiplied over the years.

Some Strawberry plants

Consequently, I’ve had to replant most of the strawberries because they were too tightly clustered together. I want them to have ample space to flourish and produce an even larger harvest.

A lot of dried leaves

Unfortunately, not all the plants made it through the winter season, and some completed their life span. Therefore, I had to remove them from the raised bed, along with numerous dried leaves.

These have already started flowering

When I first started growing strawberries five years ago, I had no idea about the different varieties and their fruiting seasons. Naturally, I was thrilled when spring arrived and my strawberries began to appear. However, much to my disappointment, by July and August, they had all ripened, and that was it – no more strawberries for the summer. It was only later that I discovered they were June-bearing strawberries.

Armed with this new knowledge, I made sure to purchase ever-bearing strawberries so that I could enjoy strawberries throughout the entire season. Silly me, I didn’t separate them initially, but I’m definitely doing so this time around.

June-bearing strawberries

There are several other pots with strawberries to tend to, and I’ll definitely keep you all updated on how they’re doing throughout the season. Hubby got me a 36 Pockets Vertical Garden hanging wall planter, and I plan to plant most of the ever-bearing strawberries in it to see how well it works. Unfortunately, I’ve been unable to mount it to the wall and have been waiting for my hubby to help me with it. Here’s an image:

I hope that wherever you are, you’ll have the opportunity to grow some of your favorite fruits and vegetables this season. I’m also open to tips and tricks to maximize my space and get larger yields, so feel free to share them with me in the comment section. Until next time, God bless.
