When the Sermon Hits: A Woman on Purpose

This week, I absolutely had to bring my experience here to share with you. I love when God sends a message that snaps us back into alignment, that gentle but firm reminder: “Hey, I created you for a purpose… so let’s get on with it.”

Last Sabbath was Women’s Emphasis Day, and the sermon could not have been more timely. The message, “A Woman on Purpose,” was presented by Sis. Maxine Legall, a knowledgeable, sweet-spirited woman of God. As I sat beside her on the platform, listening to the praise team, I heard her singing along and thought to myself, “Wow… this lady can sing!”

My pic of the week: Three siblings joining their voices in praise to God as Sis Legall looks on.

The scripture focus was Esther 4:13–17, and while I can’t speak for anyone else, I know my spirit has been especially screaming purpose and elevate. At this point, I’ve decided to marry the two that is to find my true purpose so I can elevate to the place Christ designed for me. I also know several sisters who are feeling that same tug toward a life of intentional purpose.

And because I’m not one to withhold a good thing, I made sure to take notes so I could share the main points with you. This is just a summary, and I may have add a few fillers here and there but I hope it does justice to the message.

Before diving in, here are a few phrases Sis. Legall dropped that I had to scribble down for future encouragement:

  • “Stepping into purpose is not perfect.”
  • “We are called to be women of purpose.”
  • “Move forward — no matter what.”

Now, let’s get into the heart of the sermon.

  1. Purpose Is Often Revealed Through Crisis

Sometimes it’s in our toughest seasons that our purpose becomes clear. Purpose often emerges when something needs to change. So if you find yourself with a strong desire to change, you might just be moments from unlocking your purpose. Pursue it!

Sis. Legall reminded us of Romans 8:28, that God works all things together for good. This is true however we should always be aware that Satan wants the opposite for us; he wants us to give up or keep delaying what we know in our hearts we need to do, so he throws challenges our way to distract us from our purpose. But crisis can be the very place where clarity is born.

She encouraged us to ask ourselves:

  • What is my purpose?
  • Am I walking in my purpose?
  1. Purpose Is Not Accidental

Nothing in our lives happens by chance. Our experiences, even the painful ones, prepare us for purpose.

She reminded us of Jeremiah 1:5, that God knew us before we were formed. Esther’s appointment as queen was not accidental. God positioned her intentionally for a divine assignment.

When God places something on our hearts, He expects obedience. Our obedience becomes the blessing someone else has been praying for.

  1. Purpose Requires Courage

Stepping into purpose often means stepping into uncertainty. It can feel scary, but we must choose faith over fear.

Esther surely felt terrified when she learned of the danger facing her people, and the danger she faced approaching the king without permission. But before she moved, she prepared. She called for fasting and prayer, seeking God’s protection.

Sis. Legall reminded us:

“Favor follows prayer and fasting.”

Because Esther obeyed, God granted her favor before the king.

  1. A Vibrant Prayer Life Drives Purpose

Prayer reveals what we cannot see. God is all-knowing, and when we submit to Him, He reveals the path ahead.

Throughout Scripture, whenever there was crisis or uncertainty, God’s people fasted and prayed for direction. Christ himself, took time to be with his father before moving. Purpose becomes clearer in the presence of God.

So if you are already living your purpose, may God continue to bless and strengthen you. If you are in progress and on the verge of unlocking your purpose, keep pushing and keep obeying, Christ is with you every step of the way. And if you find yourself where I am on some days, still unsure of what your true purpose is, do not lose faith. Keep pursuing God. He is more than able to reveal what He designed you to be.

“Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand”
(Proverbs 19:21 (ESV)).
