Scraps Don’t Mean Garbage — They Can Make a Comeback

Rose on deck

Every spring I’m amazed at how life returns. What looked dry, lifeless, or forgotten suddenly bursts with color and hope. It’s as if God Himself breathes into the earth and whispers, “Live again.”

This week my mind went back to 2022.
I remembered picking up a handful of scraps from a rose bush, pieces the owner was about to throw in the garbage. Something in me said, “Take them.” So I brought them home, stuck them in the dirt, and left them alone.

By the next summer, my deck was full of roses.
Bright. Beautiful. Alive.
I had never felt so much joy.

And that’s when it hit me:
Scraps don’t mean garbage.

So many times we feel rejected, overlooked, or written off by people, by circumstances, or even by our own mistakes. We start believing that nothing good can come from where we are. But that rose bush taught me something powerful:

Being tossed aside doesn’t cancel your purpose.

With the right care, the right mindset, determination, or even just one person who believes in you, everything can change. People may see scraps, but God sees a masterpiece in progress. He sees His unique creation though bent, bruised, maybe a little weathered but still full of potential and promise.

So the next time you see something being thrown out, or you feel like you are the one being discarded, pause and ask yourself:

Is this really the end, or is there more that can come from this or me?

Look at that rose.
Once rejected.
Now radiant.

Someone saw purpose in what others called waste. Someone took it home, nurtured it, and today it stands as a reminder that “what nuh dead, don’t dash it way.” As long as you have life, God can still bring beauty out of your story. The comeback is always sweeter.

Be well and be blessed.
