The Blessing I Almost Missed: When God Elevates You in Steps

Learning to Recognize God’s Small Doors on the Way to Bigger Blessings

Many times we find ourselves anticipating the next big opportunity in life. As Christians, we pray for blessings, sometimes specific ones we’ve been waiting on for years. But in that waiting, we can become so focused on the “big blessing” that we overlook the small, quiet ways God is already moving. The little crumbs. The stepping stones. The gentle nudges that lead us toward the very thing we’ve been praying for. Recently, I was reminded just how easy it is to miss those moments, and how close I came to missing one myself.

The Unexpected Offer

A few weeks ago, I met with someone to discuss arrangements for a future undertaking. Somewhere in the conversation, we drifted into gardening — a love of mine. I shared how I’ve been planting on my small deck, dreaming of something bigger one day.

Day1: Cleaning up

Then she said something that stunned me:

“I have two lots in a community garden. Would you like one?”

And to my surprise… I hesitated.

I actually said I’d be too busy.
But immediately, my spirit nudged me:
“Self, are you serious? Don’t you see God in this?”

God was elevating me — from my deck to a larger space.
From pots and raised beds to actual ground.
From waiting… to receiving.

I looked at my husband, turned back to her, and said yes.

One Week Later

It’s been a week, and we’ve been busy — weeding, plowing, preparing the soil. What an unexpected blessing. And how close I came to fumbling it.

This made me wonder: How many times have I done this before? How many times have I dismissed the small thing because I was too focused on the big thing?

We are almost done weeding and plowing

God Moves Strategically

God hears every prayer. But He doesn’t always take us from one place to the next in a single leap. Sometimes He moves us strategically, one step at a time, so we gain the experience needed to steward the bigger blessing.

For nearly nine years, I grew food on my deck. I learned. I experimented. I failed. I succeeded.
I grew, not just plants, but discipline, patience, and skill.

And now, without a waitlist, without striving, without forcing anything…God used someone else to open a door I didn’t even know was available.

He next-leveled me. And I am one step closer to the dream He planted in my heart.

Don’t Miss the Small Blessings

Be careful not to disregard the small blessings because you’re distracted looking for the big one.
Sometimes the “little” thing is the doorway to the “greater” thing. Sometimes the crumb is the confirmation. Sometimes the stepping stone is the blessing.

Before you go, share this with me:
Have you ever almost fumbled a blessing or opportunity because it didn’t look the way you expected? I’d love to hear your story; we grow when we learn from one another.

Be well, and be blessed.
