Be Well Wednesday: Cayenne Pepper as a Flu Fighter

It’s Wellness Wednesday, and today we continue our Flu Fighters in My Kitchen series with a fiery favorite, cayenne pepper. This powerful spice is more than just heat; it’s a natural ally against cold and flu.

Recently, my eldest, who’s away at college, called me sounding excited. She shared how my method had helped her. I had sent her off with a bottle of cayenne pepper and reminded her to always keep honey, lemon, onions, and garlic nearby; especially during flu season.

Now, you know how young people can be. They don’t always listen until something happens. Well, she felt the flu coming on, reached for the honey, sprinkled cayenne on top, and took it several times. By the next day, she was back to feeling like herself again. Hearing that my lesson didn’t fall on deaf ears filled me with joy.

Cayenne pepper

Why Cayenne Pepper?

Cayenne has been used in traditional medicine for centuries to restore health and healing. It’s not only medicinal but also a flavorful addition to cuisine, adding spice without the worry of heartburn.

When it comes to natural remedies, cayenne plays a vital role in fighting cold and flu:

  • Clears congestion by stimulating circulation
  • Soothes sore throats with its warming properties
  • Boosts immunity through its antioxidant compounds

Natural Remedy Spotlight

Last week’s post featured cayenne pepper as part of a broader natural remedy. If you missed it, take a moment to read, it’s worth trying!

Here are two additional ways to use cayenne pepper for relief:

  1. Honey + Cayenne Boost: Sprinkle cayenne over a spoonful of raw honey. Take several times a day when you feel flu symptoms coming on. This simple blend can help fight infection and restore energy.
  2. Warm Cayenne Drink: Mix warm water, lemon juice, a touch of honey, and a pinch of cayenne. Sip slowly to soothe a sore throat and clear a stuffy nose. Cayenne helps shrink dilated blood vessels, easing congestion and bringing relief.
  3. Classic Cayenne Pepper & Honey Cough Remedy: This recipe is from the University of Pittsburgh. 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1/4 teaspoon grated ginger, 1 tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons water. Instructions: mixed all ingredients together, allow to infuse, then take 1 teaspoon as needed for cough relief.

“O Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.” (Psalm 30:2)

Cayenne pepper reminds us that sometimes the simplest gifts from creation carry the greatest healing power. Whether sprinkled on honey or stirred into a warm drink, it’s a fiery friend in the fight against flu.

Be bless and be well!
