How healthy is your circle of influence: is it time for a change?

I have been in deep thought for a while now, especially since stepping into 2026. One theme keeps replaying in my mind: the importance of finding your circle; finding where you truly belong and align. Many of us spend time in spaces God never intended for us to stay in. Some of us recognize it but struggle to break free; others cling to what is familiar, even when it no longer feeds us. Some even stay in a space of zero position influence, encouragement or growth because the feel guilty when they think about changing, growing, or moving on.

Lately, I honestly feel like God is urging me, through the Holy Spirit to find my space, my true company, the people who align with where I see myself going. A circle where I can grow, stretch, and become who God wants me to be.

Our circle truly matters.
You’ve probably heard this more and more, and it’s because influence is powerful. Usually, the strongest influence in a group quietly shapes the entire dynamic. So if it is not you, who is influencing you? Before we know it, we’re doing things we would never do, saying things we would never say, thinking things in ways we should not be thinking, eating things we said we wouldn’t, and slipping here and slipping there while slowly losing ourselves.

Growing up, I was told, “Show me your company and I will tell you who you are.” It’s true. We are often judged and shaped by the people we spend the most time with.

Another saying reminds us: “Bad company corrupts good intentions.” And whether we quote it perfectly or not, the message stands. When we stay in unhealthy spaces, we eventually absorb the patterns, the energy, and the mindset of those environments.

Statistics show this truth as well. Research confirms that our habits, mindset, and even long‑term health are shaped by the people around us. Dr. Mark Hyman recently shared a short video explaining how community is one of the strongest predictors of behavior change and long‑term wellness. See link below. Science supports what Scripture has been teaching us all along: our circle influences our direction.

So get let us get connected with people who share our values. If you love fitness, surround yourself with friends who enjoy working out. If you’re committed to a healthy lifestyle, find a circle that encourages that journey. If you want to deepen your relationship with God, seek out people who are serious about serving Him and growing spiritually. And these are only a few examples as this applies to every aspect of our lives.

Now is not the time to dwell in spaces where we do not belong. Now is not the time to shrink ourselves to fit into rooms God never sent you to. When we stay in misaligned environments, we rob ourselves of becoming the best version of who God created you to be. Trust me, I know because I have been there and still need to make more changes.

While we are at it, let us not forget to look at ourselves to see how we are influencing others. Are we helping them to become the best version of themselves, or are we hampering their growth? If it is the latter, we can become better or step aside so they can find their place.

Growth requires honesty; honesty about where we are, where we’re struggling, and where we desire to go in Christ and personally. And part of that honesty is acknowledging that we cannot grow in soil that suffocates us.

Scripture reminds us:

  • “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” — Proverbs 13:20
  • “Do not be deceived: Bad company corrupts good character.” — 1 Corinthians 15:33
  • And the grounding question: “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” — Amos 3:3

These aren’t just verses, they are warnings, invitations, and blueprints for alignment, and I am in a season where I am craving alignment. Are you?

So let us strive to find spaces that make us bloom.
Spaces that stretch us. Spaces that call us a higher standard of living, of being. Spaces that reflect the future God is preparing for us.

Even if it means changing our friends. Even if it means shifting our community. Even if it means walking away from what is familiar.

Because our circle is not just about companionship beloved, it’s about destiny. And in this season, God is calling many of us to circles that match our calling, not our comfort.
