Does Natural Deodorant Work?

Since learning about the possible disadvantages of using regular deodorant, I have switched to more natural ones. Regular deodorants may cause cancer, hormone disruption, Alzheimer’s, and irritation due to r harmful ingredients, such as aluminum, that they contain. On the other hand, natural deodorants contain natural ingredients that are not harmful to the body. Initially, I had no idea how to make natural deodorant, but luckily there were several brands on the market, but they can be a bit pricey. Ultimately, I decided that making my deodorant for myself and my family was the best way.

My first attempt at making homemade deodorant was back in 2017. I found a recipe comprising corn starch, baking soda, coconut oil, and Jojoba oil. Both my husband and I tried it to see how it worked, but since he was at work all day, his job was to report how it worked throughout the day. I was happy to learn that he did not smell stinky. However, after using it for about two weeks, his underarm hair turned reddish. I attributed this to the deodorant. I stopped using it immediately, even though I was fine, but he continued using it until it finished. I did not make any more for a while. I later learned that baking soda could be harsh on the skin and was discouraged. Boomer! So what was I supposed to do now? I stopped using those deodorants with baking soda, and for the most part, I refrained from using deodorant unless I was going out.

We have used brands such as Toms, Native, Schmidt’s, Lume, and others that we found at Marshall’s and otherwise; Lume worked the best for us. I remember purchasing it and taking it with me when I visited Jamaica, and it performed well in the heat. I did not smell funky at all. The others did not do well, especially during the hot months or when I had a very active day.

To some extent, our lifestyle may help improve our body odor, so if we eat clean and drink enough fluids, we should smell relatively okay without deodorant or using natural ones. But I still think that since waste is being removed from our bodies, we need deodorant assistance to keep that funk away.

I’m not too fond of foul odors and do not want my armpits to offend anyone. So since this is the case, I have started to test out a few homemade recipes again that I found online. Below is the latest batch my family and I are currently testing. For the most part, it seems to help, yet when it is a sweaty and hot day, it does not last long, so I have to wipe and add again. We spent long days at church on Sabbath, so as a precaution, I have my daughter check me, and I check her at intervals.

The bottom line is that being healthy in every way is my ultimate goal, so while regular deodorants may work well and smell great, if there is a chance that my family or I could be negatively affected if I continue to use it, its reason enough to find much safer alternatives. Therefore, I am still searching for that homemade deodorant recipe that will get the job done just as well as regular ones. So if for any reason, you have a recipe that I can try, please feel free to share. Who knows, maybe together we can develop the perfect natural deodorant.

God bless.

  1. If anyone has an ingredient that works, please share. The hot weather is fast approaching, and that means increased sweat.
