A few days ago, a video crossed my For You Page; a simple clip from a woman who isn’t a neuroscientist by profession but studies the field passionately. Her topic was “One Year of Neuroscience in 60 Seconds.”
And honestly, it hit me harder than I expected.
Not because she had credentials behind her name, but because her words echoed something I’ve been learning in my own life: what we repeatedly say to ourselves matters. Our brain records it. Our body responds to it. Our future quietly bends in the direction of our inner dialogue.
Many of us grew up in cultures where we “talk out loud” to release frustration: saying things like “mi tired,” “mi cyaan bother,” “mi done,”(I am not trying anymore or I give up) “mi bruk,” (I have no money or I am poor) or “nutten nah gwaan” (nothing is happening for me). We weren’t trying to curse our future; we were venting. But even then, the brain is listening.
It wasn’t until a few years ago that I realized how deeply this shaped me. And here I am again, reminded that words are powerful and should not be spoken carelessly simply because we can.
The video shared ten insights that I want to pass on today, not as scientific claims, but as reflections that stirred something in me.
1. Your Brain Believes What You Repeatedly Tell It
If you constantly say you’re broke, stuck, unlucky, or incapable, your brain eventually accepts that as truth. Stop pity. Speak power.
2. Anxiety and Excitement Feel the Same in the Body
Your body doesn’t know the difference. You choose the story; so, choose your story wisely.
3. We Don’t See With Our Eyes — We See With Our Minds
Your eyes collect data. Your mind interprets it.
Seeing isn’t believing. Believing is seeing.
4. Every Thought Sends Chemicals Through the Body
Your cells respond to your mindset. Victim thinking keeps you stuck; hopeful thinking supports healing.
5. Motivation Is Unreliable — Discipline Is the Real Power
Dopamine discipline means doing the hard thing even when you don’t feel like it.
6. Your Environment Shapes You More Than Willpower Ever Will
Family, friends, neighborhood, atmosphere; they all influence your output.
7. The People Around You Rewire Your Brain
Mirror neurons mean you become what you’re surrounded by.
8. The Subconscious Learns Through Repetition and Emotion
Affirmations only work when you feel them, believe them, and repeat them.
9. The Brain Loves What’s Familiar — Even When It’s Toxic
Comfort isn’t always healthy. Familiar isn’t always safe.
10. Neuroplasticity Means You Are Not Stuck
Your brain can change. Your patterns can change.
Your life can change.
I’m not a neuroscientist, and I can’t professionally validate every point she made. But I can say this:
It aligns with what Scripture has been teaching us all along. Words matter. Thoughts matter. Environments matter. What we allow into our minds and our spaces matters.
What Scripture Says About Our Words
- “Life and death are in the power of the tongue.” — Proverbs 18:21
- “Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut.” — Proverbs 21:23 (NLT)
- “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouth.” — Ephesians 4:29
- “A soft answer turns away wrath.” — Proverbs 15:1
- “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth.” — Psalm 141:3
God has always warned us:
Your words shape your world.
What Scripture Says About Our Minds
- “As a person thinks, so they are.” — Proverbs 23:7
- “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” — Romans 12:2
- “Take every thought captive.” — 2 Corinthians 10:5
- “Set your mind on things above.” — Colossians 3:2
- “Think on what is true, noble, pure, lovely.” — Philippians 4:8
God has always told us:
Your thoughts shape your life.
So… Is Your Self‑Talk Sabotaging Your Future?
Maybe the real question is:
What story are you telling your brain every day?
What atmosphere are you living in?
Who are you allowing to influence your inner world?
What familiar patterns are you clinging to that no longer serve you?
Self‑growth isn’t just about habits.
It’s about language, mindset, environment, and spiritual alignment.
Neuroplasticity says you can change.
Scripture says you can be transformed.
God says you can be renewed.
And that means your future is not fixed; it’s forming with every thought, every word, every decision.
This entire Be Well Wednesday was inspired by a 60‑second video that unexpectedly found me this week. If you want to watch it for yourself, I’ve shared it below.
